Hello lovely people! I am back at it with a subject that I`ve been waiting to discuss for sooo long. I already brought it up on social media a couple of times, but I never got to tell you why do I think online lurking is the worst thing one can do. No, I am not being overly dramatic, the impact the digital world is having on us is tremendous and most of the time we don`t even realize it.
But first I should tell you what being a lurker means. Don`t worry if you didn`t know, I didn’t for a long time either.
`A lurker is typically a member of an online community or PLN (personal learning network) who observes, but does not participate. Lurkers make up a large proportion of all users in online communities and are referred to using many names, including browsers, read-only participants, non-public participants, legitimate peripheral participants, or vicarious learners. ` Wikipedia
The reason I wanted to write this article in the first place is because I know their number is concerning. How do I know that? Well, there are stats. And besides stats, as you can see, even a definition from Wikipedia asserts they represent a large portion of all users.
Now that we established what lurking is, here`s the reason you shouldn`t do it. We all know that social media and this whole digital world is the future, as the astonishing number of users is only continuing to grow every single day.
`Never before has there been a more powerful influence on human behavior, irrespective of country or culture, than the combined effect of digital technologies. ` says an article about the digital world on Forbes.com
Not only that, but there are predictions stating that in the future everyone is going to be an influencer, so you can only imagine the crazy world awaiting for us. So what do we do about the ones that are perpetuating hatred, poor taste and stupidity. And no, I am not being mean. I`m just being realistic. Have you seen the communities these people manage to gather? They`re huge and anything but shy. You know that saying “Empty vessels make the most noise!”.
So what happens while you are lurking around? Most probably team `empty vessels` is growing even more while someone that actually has something to say will remain in the shadow, wondering if it`s worth all the effort. `Empty vessels` are the one getting to influence others and grow their online presence while the other party (let`s call them the `full vessels`) might be giving up. In another order of thoughts, you are letting the `empty vessels` to ultimately shape the entire digital culture and mindset.
Bottom line the ones that are staying very active in the online environment (attention, scrolling around doesn`t count as being very active), get to decide what this digital world is going to be all about. That`s why it`s utterly important to start engaging today. Don`t let the `empty vessels` decide for you, as the ones who deserve to be heard can only thrive if you take action. Now, who`d you like your kids to get influenced by?
` The spectrum of emotions, experiences and behaviors driven by digital are vast, and no one is immune to its influence. Our personal values can be easily corrupted if we are not careful in protecting them, so in the wake of all that noise, everyone must remember what and who is truly important, set boundaries and act accordingly. `Forbes.com
